Another nice article from Copyblogger about how to be a pioneer in marketing. It’s so true: what used to be exciting and new, is now commonplace. You used to be able to attract attention with e-books, Twitter accounts, webinars, video lessons… Now it’s just commonplace, it’s basic. If you don’t do it, you look old-fashined.
So yes, you need to master the New Basics. On top of decent copywriting, running a blog and/or website, email marketing, (social) networking, sales pitching… you now need to be able to
- Create viral blog posts, e-books and videos
- Build out a viable and believable presence on all online networks
- Master SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and throw in some Pay-Per-Click (mostly AdWords)
- Install an e-commerce module everywhere that accepts all major payment methods
- And so on…
The bad news is…
It’s all moving so fast you can’t even be expected to follow anymore. Except if your business is doing marketing all day. For most, it’s just a means to an end.
The good new is…
It’s only become commonplace because it’s also become a lot easier to do. Many things can now be done in a fraction of the time they used to take. Setting up a website, creating video’s, organising webinars… That used to take months! Now, it’s pretty much a few clicks, some (free) software and you’re set.
If you want to keep up, you need to find a good rhythm. So take what you have, and master it. Then add on one more technique until you have it in your stride. Only then add another. And another. And remember: the old ways still work. It’ll just work even better when you master the new.
